IEEE P1900.1

Working Group on Definitions and Concepts for Dynamic Spectrum Access: Terminology Relating to Emerging Wireless Networks, System Functionality, and Spectrum Management

Scope and objectives

The IEEE Std 1900.1™-2008 was published on September 26th 2008. The standard can be obtained at: http://standards.ieee.org/findstds/standard/1900.1-2008.html.

From February 2nd 2011, the 1900.1 Working Group works on a new project that aims to provide an up-to-date standard terminology for upcoming dynamic spectrum access systems:

  • Title: IEEE Standard Definitions and Concepts for Dynamic Spectrum Access: Terminology Relating to Emerging Wireless Networks, System Functionality, and Spectrum Management Amendment: Addition of New Terms and Associated Definitions.
  • Scope: This amendment adds new terms and associated definitions to IEEE 1900.1
  • Purpose: Due to the rapidly evolving field of dynamic spectrum access (DSA) and related technologies, IEEE 1900.1 does not cover all terms in use as of today. This amendment provides definitions for those missing terms only.

The IEEE Std 1900.1a™-2012 was published on January 25th, 2013. The standard can be obtained at: http://standards.ieee.org/findstds/standard/1900.1a-2012.html

Technical relevance to QoSMOS

Due to the Chair position of a QoSMOS partner there have been numerous submissions to this WG.

Status and outlook for QoSMOS

After finalizing the 1900.1a, the working group now approaches a revision of the IEEE Std 1900.1™-2008 aiming for approval of the revised standard in early 2017. This revision adds additional definitions, modifies existing definitions, and removes outdated definitions; updates the auxiliary text and informative annexes to reflect new concepts and developments in advanced radio systems; introduces a taxonomy of terms which depicts relationships between definitions and concepts, and updates the document structure to align revised definitions, concepts, and relationships between terms and definitions. As an immediate impact of QoSMOS, this activity will also introduce terms and definitions regarding spectrum trading into the new draft standard.
