QoSMOS at WInnComm

QoSMOS at SDR'11-WInnComm

The first international workshop on QoS & Mobility in Cognitive Communications (QMCC'11) was held at SDR'11-WInnComm in Washington D.C. on 29th November 2011. The workshop included a presentations session and a panel session (slides from presentations can be found undefinedhere). As well as QMCC'11, SDR'11-WInnComm had many sessions that are directly relevant to the work done in QoSMOS. In particular, "The Future of Whitespace Communications" workshop. This workshop included a panel session, "Extending White Space Beyond TV Bands", which included Michael Fitch (BT and QoSMOS leader).

Three members of the QoSMOS EAB were in attendance at QMCC'11, each of which gave a presentation..........

Andrew Gowans (Ofcom) presents at QMCC'11

Andrew Gowans (Ofcom), a member of the QoSMOS EAB, presented "Ofcom perspective on the challenges for TVWS radio systems using geo-location databases". He outlined Ofcom's current view on access to TV white spaces, regulations and standardisation of white space devices and databases. Andrew emphasised the fact that real life trials and measurments are required to improve understanding of white spaces. Ofcom are already involved some trials in the U.K.

Uwe Beutnagel-Buchner (C/AGT) presents at QMCC'11

Uwe Beutnagel-Buchner (C/AGT), who is a member of the QoSMOS EAB, presented "C-PMSE - Improving frequency utilization and coexistence for PMSE systems by cognitive procedures". Uwe gave an overview of the cognitive-PMSE project. This included potential use cases, requirements, architecture and operation. Uwe highlighted some of the challenges that C-PMSE could face such as the possibility of spectrum scarcity and issues for coexistence with other devices, including other PMSE.

Roland Beutler (SWR) presents at QMCC'11

Roland Beutler (SWR) presented "Introduction of WSD in the UHF band in Europe from a broadcaster's perspective". Roland gave an overview of spectrum planning for terrestrial broadcasting in Europe. White space availability and sharing conditions were discussed. Some potential opportunities highlighted for white space devices include indoor distribution of content, distribution of non-linear content, and broadband.

Tehnical presentations

Following the presentations from the EAB members, several other technical presentations were given on the subjects of QoS and mobility. There was a strong presence from EU projects including OneFIT, COGEU as well as QoSMOS.........

Klaus Moessner (UNIS) presents at QMCC'11

Klaus Moessner, (University of Surrey), representing EU project OneFIT presented "Functional architecture overview for the cognitive management of opportunistic networks in the Context of future Internet". He explains that the main objective of the OneFIT project is to design, develop and validate the concept for applying opportunistic network and respective cognitive management systems for efficient application/service/content provisioning in the fiture Internet. The proposed functional architecture aims to achieve this objective with cogntive systems such as "Cogntive system for the Management of the Opportunistic Network" (CMONs) and "Cogntive System for Coordination with the Infrastructure" (CSCIs).

Paul Sutton (TCD-CTVR) presents at QMCC'11

Paul Sutton (CTVR at Trinity College Dublin), representing EU project COGEU, presented "Cognitive radio systems for efficient sharing of TV white spaces in European context". He outlined the work done by COGEU whose main objective is to design, implement and demonstrate enabling technologies to allow efficient use of TV white spaces in Europe. Paul showed some of the results from the TVWS measurements campaign in Munich and also introduced a COGEU proposal for a secondary spectrum market of TVWS.

Dominique Noguet (CEA) presents at QMCC'11

Dominique Noguet (CEA-LETI), presented "Dependable indoor-to-outdoor wireless technology in the TVWS for first responders’ assistance". His talk represented work done for project COCPIT. He highlighted the benefit of adding video communication to public saftey systems for first responders. Dominique highlighted that TVWS are a major enabler for this type of application and the equipment and environmental constraints that must be considered.

Richard MacKenzie (BT) presents at QMCC'11

Richard MacKenzie (BT), representing QoSMOS, presented "MAC layers for white space radio systems". He introduced the QoSMOS concept for accessing white spaces. Richard then discussed the considerations to be made when choosing between scheduled and contention-based MAC layers. He then highlighted which contention-based MACs could be available for TVWS applications and how their performance can be optimised.

QMCC'11 Panel Session

The panel session was held jointly between the QMCC'11 workshop and the Regulatory workshop. The session, "The Global QoS Perspective", was moderated by Paul Kolodzy (Kolodzy Consulting). The panel consisted of Fadel Digham (NTRA), Roland Beutler (SWR and QoSMOS EAB) and Andrew Gowans (Ofcom).  

This panel discussed subjects such as the mix of technologies and the trends and impact of regulatory and standards actions.

White Space Beyond TV Bands

This panel session "Extending White Space Beyond TV Bands", was moderated by Fanny Mlinarsky (Octoscope). The panel consisted of Michael Fitch (BT and QoSMOS), Boya Lu (Chair, WInnForum TD-LTE Task Group), Keith Nolan (COST Terra Program) and Hiroshi Harada (DYSPAN Standard Committee).  

This panel discussed how white spaces can be used in bands other than the TV bands, but also the current use of TVWS and how use of TVWS can continue to progress. Discussions include the changes required for regulation and how technologies can be adapted to work in new bands.
